Life often moves fast, bringing new responsibilities and times when it feels hard to keep up. During these moments, it’s easy to notice what’s missing or what still needs to be done.
At Holistically Divine Counseling®, we believe true healing starts from within. An overflow mindset helps us move away from scarcity and notice the strengths, resources, relationships, faith, and experiences we already have.
The Power of an Overflow Mindset
Having an overflow mindset doesn’t mean acting like everything is perfect. It means seeing that even in tough or uncertain times, you still have something inside you.
Rather than only asking yourself, “What am I missing?” try asking:
“What do I already have in my life that I can build on?”
You can start making this shift by:
- Naming three things you’re grateful for each morning
- Paying attention to small moments when you feel supported or calm
- Thinking back to a time when you got through something hard
- Noticing one way you took care of yourself today
- Taking a moment to remind yourself, “I have enough for right now.”
With time, you might start to see growth where you used to see only struggle, strength where you once doubted yourself, and new possibilities where things felt uncertain.
Trusting the Process
One of the hardest parts of growing is moving forward without knowing exactly how things will turn out.
For many, faith is an important part of handling uncertainty. Trusting God doesn’t mean you have all the answers. It can mean letting go of the need to control everything and believing that clarity will come as you move forward.
For others, trust might come from personal values, community, purpose, or confidence built from past experiences.
No matter where your trust comes from, the idea is the same: you don’t need to have everything figured out before taking your next step.
Self-Care Is a Foundation, Not a Reward
People often see self-care as something to do only after feeling overwhelmed or tired. At HDC, we look at it differently.
Self-care isn’t something you have to earn. It’s what helps you keep going.
Self-care can mean saying no without feeling guilty, taking a walk, sitting quietly, asking for help, setting boundaries, or choosing to rest.
At HDC, our REST model is another way to practice self-care on purpose:
Reflect: Take a moment to notice how you feel and what you need.
Energize: Do something that helps restore your mental, emotional, physical, or spiritual energy.
Simplify: Focus on what matters most right now and let go of the pressure to do everything at once.
Trust: Remind yourself that you’ve gotten through hard times before and you can keep moving forward.
Small, intentional habits can help you find more clarity and feel restored.
You Have Something to Build From
Having an overflow mindset doesn’t mean you’ll never struggle, doubt yourself, or need help. It’s about remembering that uncertainty doesn’t take away what you already have inside.
You have experiences. You have strengths. You have learned lessons. You have resources. And you can keep building what you need along the way.
So when life feels uncertain, try asking yourself a different question:
Instead of focusing only on what’s missing, ask yourself: what do you already have in your life that you can build on?
Sometimes, noticing what you already have is the first step to seeing what’s possible.
